I got started woodworking later in life but cant wait to learn more. Watching the woodworking channel has fueled this desire. I ran a tv-vcr reapaire shop at my home for about 25 years now my old tv shop is a woodworking shop. Now I am a computer repair tech. for my income. Hope to retire in about 3-5 years and devote a lot of time to woodworking.
I am now making some round oval pic frames and using dove tail joints. I would like to join them using butterfly blanks from contrasting wood shuch as walnut. Can I make butterfly inserts with my exsiting dovetail bit?
I prob. should have went to a different thread and posted this question oh well first time here.

Hi mrbill59

"Can I make butterfly inserts with my exsiting dovetail bit?" = YES

It's a bit tricky but it can be done, Bob & Rick will show you how in one of the shows they made (Jewelry and Lingerie Cabinet) .
You can see it on the http://www.thewoodworkingchannel.com/ or your PBS.

But it's best to use the right bit that's made for the job it's called a ButterFly bit.
see the links below.

601-604 Four Part - Jewelry and Lingerie Cabinet
604. Jewelry Case Mirror, Part 4
With the completion of the unique "Queen Anne" base, the lingerie case, and the jewelry case, our "Jewelry and Lingerie Cabinet" is almost complete.
In the fourth and final part of this project, we crown the piece with the ornate mirror.
Bob will show you how to cut dovetails across a 45° mitre while Rick cuts perfect EZ link joints for the delicate little jewel drawers.

Note see the ButterFly joint in the snapshot below.

mrbill, welcome to the routerforums. Glad to have you join us. I see by your avitar you are a Kenseth fan. Is this because you live in Wisconsin? Just kidding. I like all of the Roush drivers myself. Again welcome.
