Hi Everyone...

I just found and joined the group and I am excited to be a part of such a fine community. I have been away from my hobby of woodworking for many years, but have had my interest renewed by restoring and improving a 100 year old home that we have recently moved into.

I just yesterday purchased a DW618PK 2-1/4HP Dewalt router through Amazon.com and a table from Harbor Frieght Tools that appears to meet my needs.

I would like to know other opinions on this model and if I have made a good choice. It appears that many use the Porter Cable at this forum. however it looked like the Dewalt would serve my needs. Did I goof or make a good choice?

Many thanks for your opinion and I look forward to visiting here often for advice and to contribute what I can to help others.

Hi Bob nice to meet you. Welcome to the madhouse!! A lot of very nice people to deal with here with a wealth of knowledge. From all the accounts I have heard it is a very good machine. It is not over here in New Zealand yet but when it does I am considering buying it as a second router.

Hi Aaron and nice to meet you here. I have now received my new Dewalt router set and the set of bits I ordered with it. It is a real beauty and has a smooth plunger as well as a nice fixed base. I am still waiting on the table I ordered to arrive so I can fully assemble it all and get started on my "first" project. I plan on making heating and air conditioning floor vent covers with rounded edges to cover the old floor vents that were left when installed an new system in our attic. I am a little nervous since it has been a good number of years since I have used a router. I'm sure it will come back to me as I engage the task.

I do recommed this unit if it becomes available in your area. It appears to be first quality through out.

Cheers....

Bob

While the Porter Cable may rule supreme in USA The DeWalt is the tool of choice for most in Europe.
One of the DeWalt routers are copies of the now defunct Elu Mof which are still giving sterling service after years of use.
I cant find the 618 listed here although I know that the 621 is a 1/4" router and my prefered 625 is a 1/2" one.

Hey Dewy ... over here the 621 is both 1/4" and 1/2" (I have it and it is brilliant) as well as the 625. Strange how a little bit of ocean can change stuff huh? ;)

There is often some difference between tools in one country to another.
Here, most rave about the Trend because it uses standard fittings unlike many that only have accessories that fit their own make.
The DeWalt takes the same bushes etc as the Trend.
The Trend T5 is the router against which other 1/4" routers are judged but that was an exact copy of the Swiss made Perles808 which I have used for over 6 years and cant fault.
The Swiss make routers like their watches. Pure precision.
