I use Adobe Photoshop elements to change a picture into a pattern that I can cut.

i dont know if this would work but what if you take the photo & scan it enlarge it to what ever size & then print it in black & white(no colour).
would that not give you an idea of what to decide to cut out?

That is one way to do it. Many times the result is not a pattern that is workable.
A jpeg photo works well. The better the quality of the photo, the better the resulting pattern will be. The first pic is the original, the second is usable and is accomplished by adjusting the brightness and contrast and then by manipulating the function called "photocopy" but... and the third is by my method. Which as I told you, is a bit more involved. I will try to put together a howto.
