I am recently medically retired and have decided to take up woodworking as a hobby. Although I am starting late in life I want to learn as much as I can. I have recently purchased several items for my shop, mostly low end power tools so that I can learn. I currently have a power miter saw, a table saw, a band saw, and a drill press. The next item I am going to purchase is a router and I really don't know much about them. I am looking at Dewalt and Porter Cable , 2 Hp + and want a combination base; fixed and plunge. Then I will have to learn what bits to get and how to use it. I hope I can learn alot from the forums so that I can utilize the router safely and properly.

Welcome to the router forums mdonihoo. You have found the right place to learn and any questions you have, just ask. Great bunch of experienced and knowledgable people here to answer them. Be "SAFE" and enjoy your new hobby.
Routers

Check out the DeWALT DW618B3 kit. It has 3 bases....fixed, plunge and D-Handle. I have this kit and really like it. I use it table mounted and handheld.

Check out MLCS Woodworking for bit sets. Bit Set I have had this set for 5 years and still use the bits. Also WOODCRAFT stores have $5 bit specials several times a year. I recently bought 4 of them for $20. They would have cost about $80 normally.

Get 1/2" shank bits for most jobs.
