One Of My Old Signs...

Since there was some discussion on free hand routing in another thread I thought I would post a couple photos of a sign I did for our garden about 10 years ago. I need to repaint the birds and the black edges etc. as it is starting to wear. The birds I drew on and then routed out and the letters were from a Craftsman patterns that I carbon papered on and then routed out with a dremel with router attachment. Anyway, I was just looking out the window at it and decided to take a photo :D

Nice job and the detail on the birds is awesome. As you already know, the wife and I are bird lovers and she would kill for a job like you did on those. My hands will never be steady enough for that kind of work.

You have more talents than Custer had indians, my friend.

What is that white stuff in the background? :D
Thanks Bob. Those birds are from the original artwork of a painting I did back then and is in my parent's home. I used the original drawing as a base and re drew it on it board. Bob, you could carbon paper on an image like that. The dremel router tool is very easy to use and not difficult to control at all like a full sized router would be. You can do that kind of work buddy. I know you can!

P.S. I know you know what that white stuff is, and I had to trudge out there and get my slippers wet in it! :)

Nice work -- those birds look great!

I have not used it much yet, but I bought a Dremel Stylus for myself at Christmas (I love the stuff I buy me ...) :)

It would be excellent to use for freehand routing/carving, such as the for the intricate work you did. The "pistol grip" style makes it really nice to hold, and easy to steady your hand on a worksurface while using the tool.
That's a great sign Corey, very nice detail. I always wanted to try my hand at free hand routing. I'm sure I couldn't do anything like your sign.

Corey,

That's the kind of sign, in my mind, that we have been trying to talk about.
GREAT SIGN! :) :)

Carbon paper... etc...

Looks like your "Mind" was intact when you made that one! :) :)

Super Sign...

Thank you for sharing it!

Great sign Corey. You are an artist. Looks to be in good shape for a ten year old sign.
Thanks guys!

Corey

Corey, that is a nice looking sign. Great detail on the birds. You must have used some good paint for it to last 10 years.

Corey,

Yeah... I didn't notice that...

What kind of paint did you use on that old sign?

How did you Finish it to protect it all those years?
It was painted with artists acrylics. I did put a gesso undercoating under the acrylic but the wood itself is showing it's age and the Krylon black has seen better days :)
