While I was in the city yesterday I checked out the only craft store there which is a grossly understocked Ben Franklin. The only odd ball brand of pencils they had were water colors and were way overpriced. The instructions on them said only for use on paper.

So this afternoon I ordered a set of 36 different colors of oil pencils on line at a better price than Ben Franklin wanted for 24 water color ones. .

Hi Harry.
Perhaps you have not noticed but I have recently taken up pyrography for the cold winter months while it is too cold and too expensive to heat my shop.
It is just one more woodworking hobby I have added to the ones I already do.
I will be using the coloring for my woodburning pieces etc after burning them on to the wood.

I love to see both ways. . . . non colored burns and colored ones but my personal preference from what I have already seen from others are the colored ones. I am the worlds worst painter with a brush and hope this pencil method of coloring some of my work will be more enjoyable than using artist brushes and liquid paints . Learn something new every day. :)

I will soon be a Jack of all hobbies and a master of none :D :yes4:

Some of life's little surprises have been preventing me from getting back to burning lately but I will hopefully do another one sometime this week so I will have a few to practice coloring on when my pencils arrive. .

I apply the thinner with what I think is called a stomper. It's a 6 or 7 inch long tightly rolled stick of paper pointed on both ends and is 1/4 inch thick. If you can find it in the art supply section in the craft store, buy a lot of them. I don't know what craft stores are in B.C.

Thanks Gary.
There are no craft stores in the closest town 10 km from home.
The closest small city to me in Canada is 120 km east and they don't have a craft store . They have had a few small ones over the years but always go bankrupt and leave after a year or so. . The same distance south of me over the border into USA only has a poorly stocked Ben Franklin craft store .
I hate to pay S/H on supplies but I usually have to order stuff on line.

BTW, I got a message this morning that my pencils have been shipped.

There is a Joann store in Kalispell Montana about 3.5 hours from home. We have been making a trip to that city for general shopping and just to get a few days away about once a year. My wife stocks up on her quilting needs when we go there. We are allowed to bring a LOT home tax free coming into Canada instead of the normal 12% if we stay 48 hours and there are no taxes in Kalispel either .
We stay at a $33.00 a night motel there in off season with seniors rate .
Doubt if we will be going this year though. Price of gas and everything else is getting a little overwhelming.

I will check around more locally for tortillons and see if I can find some.

Someone mentioned paint thinner and Q-tips . Would that not do the same thing ?
