This is a great option. If the piece is too large, then you could simply cut off the edges, then trim out the edges with hardwood, rounded over on the top, outside edge. Light finish on the hardwood to go with the laminate and you have a really beautiful table top you can mount on a base of some sort.A much cheaper alternative would be to find a used office furniture store and get a workstation or cubicle top. They are oftentimes throwing odd ones out so you might be able to get one for free. They come in all sorts of sizes but they are thick ( about 1 1/8") and covered with laminate on all 6 sides. All that needs to be done is to put in a router plate and a miter slot.
