I am doing pull outs for the shelves in my kitchen that dont have them. My current pull outs have a hardwood front with a dip in the middle. I could never figure out of this was supposed to be functional or merely decorative. Is there something functional about this?

My guess it is decorative.

Now that I see the pic, it could be intended to guide your fingers to the middle of the front to pull open. But is does look decorative as well.

I agree that it is for finger pull.

They are usually used when one does not want protruding knobs or handles on drawers - I have made a number of cabinets with this system - this is an African Mahogany Island unit I completed recently for a client.
Whoa there Nelly...that is sweet!

I did the same as Rob with my bathroom vanity as I wanted a clean look without the one section of drawers showing so I put them behind a door with the cut out to get fingers in to pull them out.
