I am interested in finding rail and style router bits with 1/4 inch shanks. Does anyone know where I might be able to find some? So far all I can find are 1/2 inch shanks. Thanks.

Hi, dfritz:
You may not be able to find the style and rail bits or sets of bits in 1/4" shanks.
The cut for both styles and rails is a heavy cut, and a 1/4" shaft might snap under load. If the router won't take 1/2" bits, I would suggest that you get a bigger router,
and a set of 1/2" bits. The raised panel bits, if you are going to make raised panels,
are 1/2" shafts and they would be dangerous, in 1/4" size

hope this helps, Woodnut65
woodline.com has a couple of sets. I use there 1/2 in shank cabinet maker set, and have had nothing but great results with it.

I also would throw my support behind half inch shanks, that is all I buy. You could use a 1/4 in shank and nibble away at the cut safely though.

I also recommend a 2 bit set or a fixed 2 in 1 cutter. I don't like the sets where you have to take the cutter apart and re-stack it to make the opposing cuts.

Just my 2 cents,
Don't waist your time. I did have a set with 1\4 inch shanks, I believe it was craftsman. I got so frustrated with them I threw them away. I agee with woodnut, if you can, get a bigger router.
The big bits are just too much for the smaller routers to handle.
That's my opinion.
