Recommendation on a new router under $150
Hi folks, i'm new to the forum. Looking to buy a new router to replace my old B&D (junk) that eventually failed. I plan to use it mostly in a router table that I plan to build. Not sure if I'll ever do any raised panel doors, but who knows. Probably stick with standard smaller bits, so maybe I don't need one too powerful.
I almost pulled the trigger on a DeWalt model 618 fixed base router $139 at Home Depot, but after reading the reviews, it appears this model has a bad reputation for the motor failing. Something about a thin magnet breaking apart and burning it up. I need something that will last, thanks! They have a Porter Cable Model# 690LR for nearly the same price, but it's only 1 3/4 HP whereas the DeWalt was 2 1/4 HP. It jumps to $160 for 2 1/4 HP Porter Cable. Bosch offers one for $169. Anyone have any recommendations and/or experience with any of these? We don't have a Sears anymore locally so I doubt I'll go with the Craftsman models. Don't see many used ones for sale locally either.

We have those bosch routers at our local lowes. They are 219 brand new. I've done plenty of research on these routers and I think I may pull the trigger on a bosch. Theres also triton that seemstonereallygood but a bit more money. I honestly think you may have to save and add some extra money to it or buy used. Just my thoughts though.

you need to do some searching here on Bosch, PC and Sears routers...
Tool VOE...
We constantly get new members who come here looking for parts for their Sears routers because Sears, Ereplacementparts and others don't have them... Collets in particular seem to a problem down the road and there seems to be no crossover... Yur stuck in a rut... The fact that Sears has 2nd party handling of their tools makes support and repairs even more uncertain...
I trust you are aware that Sears recently sold it's tool line to the B&D group so nobody knows what's going to happen... If it goes true to form, this isn't good...
You can add PC to list of tools w/ issues... PC was bought out by the group that owns B&D (Black & Decker) and their quality has slipped – I feel, quite a bit as in a lot...
Many of us were PC fans at one time, including me, but since the buy out many stay away from them these days... Hard lessons learned...
DeWalt (B&D group) are good tools, for the Hobbyist, but CS can suck at times and after a few years repair parts tend to be problem too.. All of my and my employees' DeWalt tools have long since gone to the scrap yard for the lack of support/parts...
Do you see a trend here w/ what's offered by the B&D group... Planned obsolescence...

I've mentioned before that I aggravated considerably a chronic rotator cuff injury by trying to lift it off a high shelf with only one hand. Dumb move, I know.

Why not spend a little more money get something 2hp or better with 1/4” and 1/2” collets

I also recommend the Bosch 1617 EVSPK kit. You can use the fixed base for under the table mounting or you can get the special base with key shown in the picture. I used my 1617 in my table for years, then got a second 1617 motor just for the table with a lift (which didn't work well--it slipped, the cardinal sin for a lift). So I bought the Triton TRA001, which has a built in lift, is a beast that can handle anything with ease, and costs less than the price of a good quality lift.
I have a couple of DeWalt 18v tools I like, but when shopping for a router, the DeWalt's height adjustment felt flimsy to me so I passed. I also had a DeWalt miter I dumped and got the Bosch sliding miter instead. What a great tool that is, and arrived in perfect alignment.

I have 3 different Hitachi routers (M12V, M12V2, and M12VC). I’ve been really happy with all 3. The M12V2 is the one I’m using in my main table because it has above table adjustment.

This morning I bought a Bosch 1617 EVS. I just went to Home Depot to look at one and they didn't have it so i went to Lowes almost across the street. They must have just gotten a shipment in because the website said it wasn't available in the store yesterday. But they had one there that had a damaged box and it was marked down to $119 (regularly $169)! Needless to say i grabbed it. No damage at all to the router and all the accessory parts are there too. Woot! Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for all the replies. :grin:

You made the right choice and will be pleased with the Bosch. I recently also bought the kit and will be installing it in a router table based on New Yankee Workshop plans.

Noticed the Bosch 1617 was marked down from $169 to $149 in Lowes yesterday in case anyone's interested.
