Hi brand new to the forum and have a question. I bought an internal radius bit to cut a finger groove in the ends of cutting boards but quickly found out that I cant get the depth I need to put the groove in the center of the board end. However, after removing the plastic base plate from the router it gives me the additional ~1/4" depth im seeking. Are there any safety issues I'm missing by doing this or will the risk simply be potential marking of the workpiece due to metal on wood instead of smooth plastic?

Yes those are the ones I hadn't seen them before either but if I can get it to work it eliminates the need for a router table and/or jig which I like the idea of.
I have an old Craftsman 315 router and the plastic is the same size as the metal. I did a dry run just to see how it would glide and it seems to be ok but I may try some packing tape or something to help it along.
I didn't even think about the collet touching so i will take a closer look at that. Thanks for the input!

Yeah i made sure of that. That's actually the reason i started exploring other options, looked into a collet extension since i know not to pull the shank out any further than it should be but apparently those are only supposed to be used on router tables.
I'll give this a shot and see how it goes. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something.
