Excellent post. I bet a lot of bits get tossed that only needed cleaning. Sharpening is pretty easy.
. In one minute, this guy does the deed. You can also buy credit card diamond "stones" that fit all kinds and sizes of bits. They work the same way. Remove the bearings if you can.
