Welcome manhandler. Honestly if you would like a nice shop project I would suggest building the Oak Park table and then buying their router top to go with it. It is a good one for beginners or veteran router users. Check out the Oak Park site: http://www.oak-park.com
Welcome manhandler to the router forums. I also like the Oak-Park table, but a lot of it depends on what you want. Maybe one with t-tracks in it. Maybe a high type of a fence. I like to keep it simple myself.
