If you can, find a copy of the December 2001 WOODWORKER'S JOURNAL . It contains an article on making a large (or small) dowel from a square or rectangular piece of stock. The article is on page 38 and describes the making of a Candleholder. It takes a lot more time than a lathe, but then when you don't have a lathe.... creativity is the solution.
