PC is right. We have used the 690, 9290 cordless, and the 890. All are great routers.
And best of all they are free to use at the router workshop..cant beat that price..LOL
I have the 690 and 694 PC..PC has been around for years. I have an old belt sander ( early 1900 i believe. still works good.

How important is variable speed? My wife bought me a 693LRPK 11 amp router for Christmas, thinking it was variable speed. She wants to take it back to the store and get the variable speed.

Variable speed is important with large dia. router bits like the raised panel bit. Are you wanting to use this router with larger dia. bits. If so you would use variable speed. Next thing to think about is because the 690 series is an 11 amp and might be a bit underpowered for the larger dia. bits. It can handle these router bits but the power is a factor.
Jerry the 694 Porter-cable has the Variable speed control. It is important to have..the other option you have is to buy a seperate speed control for the router you have.
I have used my 1 3/4 hp with a large raised panel bit..doesnt work too bad..It does have good power for a 11 amp.
The other options as far as bits go.is to buy a raised panel vertical bit.
