Got a small dovetail fixture for Christmas that does 1/2" and 1/4" dovetails. Does it matter what the angle is? The instructions give a part # for the 1/4" dovetail bit but at the store the salesman gets mistified and starts speaking in tongues and wants to sell me a 1/4" straight bit. I need a small cutter because my project material is only 3/8" thick. Can anyone give me an actual size of the cutter I need to make 1/4" dovetails and I can go to Amana, they have it all. Thanks to anyone that can shed light.

With jigs that are designed for through dovetails, the angle on the dovetail bit needs to match the geometry of the jig, since the pins are cut with a straight bit guided by the angled fingers on the jig. (The angle on the pin template fingers needs to match the angle on the dovetail bit for the joint to fit.) For half-blind DTs, the angle on the DT bit is less critical. The size of the guide bushing also needs to match the jig specs, and may be different for cutting tails and pins.
