I bought a used ryobi r160 router. I tried to use use it, and it kicks on, then dies a second later, even if I haven’t made contact with any wood. What can I do to fix it? Or is it done for?

Did you test run the router before handing over the $$$$$$$?

Could be a reason it was sold!!!

There may be a number of reasons why this is happening.

PS: this is a question from a 2016 post:
I have a R160 RYOBI Router and cannot keep it running. The spindle lock doesn't seem to completely unlock and after a few seconds of running it slips out of the "partial" position and stops running. Any thoughts?

Tyler - welcome to the forum.
I have an extension cord that sometimes makes the tools exhibit the same symptoms.
So - you could have issues with the connections the cord plugs into.
the tool's plug itself
a bad on/off switch
too many to actually choose from without any of us actually holding it in our hands.
Don't mark it off just yet.
How much did you buy it for ? Where did you buy it ? Did you get to test it before buying it ?

thank you for your response. I bought it used from my grandfather and I used it last year in the shop and it worked just fine. I have it plugged directly into a wall socket. It jumps the locking mechanism I think, as I can lock/unlock the motor and it’ll start up again for a second.

Thank you for the response. I bought it from my grandfather and I used it all last year on projects. That post thread reads exactly like my problem. I will have to look it up.
