Setting Jointer Knives

Saw this, thought it might be of interest to someone looking for a(nother) way to set the knives on their jointer. I have one of the magnetic jigs, but this looked like a pretty slick way to get the job done.

I just did approximately the same thing, and it really works.

A very interesting idea, but remember that only the very thin tape must be used, not the foam type.
I like this idea. I think I'd prefer to try it with Scotch Magic Tape, which is extremely thin. I'd fold over one end so I could easily peel it off.

I don't think that the article specified what type of tape to use, but I believe that I'd try electrical tape - it's thin, and an insulator, which is what you're looking for.

I’ll have to try that. My current method is to lay a hardwood block on the out feed table and adjust it until the knives just touch it enough I can feel it.

To avoid having to insulate the bar, I made mine by screwing a piece of narrow aluminum bar to the edge of a straight oak 1 x 2, with the screw nearest the blades long enough to protrude above the 1 x 2. The protrusion gives you a metal surface to connect the ohm meter, or in my case, an automotive continuity light, to the aluminum bar.

Then I sawed a through slot across the aluminum bar about an inch from that screw so it would be isolated from the part of the bar that's contacting the bed. I was able to avoid having to shim with tape to insulate the bar that way.
Electrical tape is on the thick side Charles, it will introduce a very slight error.

That's exactly the way I have done it for years tom.
