You need to use bits whose shanks match your collet size. You can get various adapter bushings to change that size to a limited degree. What router are you using and what collets come with it?

There are two measuring systems, and each has two basic shank sizes. If you machine is metric, then shanks are either 6mm 8mm or 12mm. If Imperial, that's 1/2 and 1/4 inch. The collet only changes a few thousandths between loose and tight, so they are not interchangeable. The router instructions will give you the required shank size, but usually, bigger is better.

Many of their routers had both 1/4" and 1/2" collets. Check if you have two collets. 1/2" shanks are preferred for larger bits but you'd need the 1/2" collet.
