Hi Attie

It's a art forum and it takes years to get it down right, you can get many books that will show you how and buy many tools to do it with but again no easy way to get it down, it just takes time, the best way I have found is to sharpen the tool and then test it, if your happy with the cut use the tool if not, sharping it again, a pro. can make it look easy but it's not it's like when you see someone painting they make it look easy but it took them many years to get it right.. :)

Bj :)
If you are attempting to sharpen a chisel, never try to do it "free hand". You'll never get a true sharp edge. To add to Bob's reply, there are many, many books out there. The best advice to be given... is just like with anything else, "patience".
If my memory serves correctly, the proper method is what's known as the "3-step" method with some sort of grinding/sanding grit, (not sandpaper or a grinder).
I'll try to post a link to the above method.

Hope this helps.

Use a jig such as the Veritas Mark (?)( about $50.00) to establish the angle and use the "scary-sharp" sandpaper/glass system. Start at a low grit and progress up to as high as 15-2000 grit automotive paper.

IMHO, the best way to sharpen chisels, etc. ...
