Skateboard Varnishes and Oil Finishes

848 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  old55
Hi everyone,

Currently, I am trying to work out what finish would be best for a skateboard I have just produced in Design and Technology class. I intend for this board's purpose to be purely ornamental so with design elements I am placing aesthetics as paramount. I am looking at a bunch of options such as veneer, varnishes, etc. Could someone please advise me as to what they think about my ideas.

Thanks,

Matt.

Personally, I think that if it's not going to be used it pretty much doesn't matter what finish you use.
It's a bit of a hard question to answer Matt because it depends on whether you are looking for a woodworking type finish or whether you would prefer a graphics type finish which would be what would appeal to most youth of today. If it's woodworking I would look for a burl veneer and give it a few (maybe quite a few) coats of spray lacquer. Lacquer dries quickly so many coats of finish can done quickly.

Matt I'm not sure of your woodworking abilities but if it will not be used and you are just looking for that wow factor then you might try some marquetry and make a skateboard type scene, finish that off with several coats of lacquer.
