Skil 1825 quarter inch collet problem

Hi - I am new to routers. I just bought a Skil 1825 router which is supposed to work with 1/2 and 1/4 inch collet size bits.

The 1/4 inch adapter sleeve that came with my router doesn't seem to fit into the collet chuck.

Does anyone know the right way to get it in?

Thanks.

I'm not sure about skil but, you might try removing the collet and inserting the sleeve from the bottom and reinstalling the collet with the sleeve in it. In some cases, that's the manual's directions for inserting an adapter sleeve.
For the future, I've found that a 1/4" collet is better than an adapter. Again, don't know about Skil but if they offer one, that's the way to go. They aren't expensive....at least not for my PC, anyway.

Hello and welcome! Do you have all the tension off the 1/2 in collet? They will sometimes hold up in the arbor and not loosen completely. I know nothing about Skill, but it is something to try! Enjoy the forum>

Hi Arde,

I have that exact model and my 1/4" collet fits in very well. I just went out and tried it. Try making sure the collet nut is loose enough, if that's not the problem, please describe exactly what happens so we can be of more help.

BTW, I have used both collets successfully.

Thanks Arde and welcome to the forums, there is all sorts of good help here.

Ed......:)

Thanks all for your responses. It is great to be welcomed :)

I have completely removed the collet nut. Still the "adapter sleeve" doesn't go into the existing collet at the end of the "armature shaft". (see attached picture from the manual pg 9, fig 6). Should I attempt to widen the existing collet with pliers - I'm afraid to damage it.

Arun, I too am not familiar with your particular router but I would suggest that you measure the outside diameter of the sleeve to make sure that it matches the collet. Mistakes do happen, a while back I ordered a 10mm reducer sleeve for my 1/2" (12.7mm) Makita, when it finally arrived it wouldn't tighten because it's OD was the European 12mm!

Thanks Ed and Harry for your suggestions - it helped to finally figure out that I had a defective router. I took the adapter sleeve to Lowes and it fit perfectly on the display router. So I returned the router and bought a replacement Skil 1825, and everything works great now! Made my first (rather uneven) dado cut, but I think I will learn :)

If you are talking about the original 1/2" there's nothing to take out. According to the pic above it's part of the motor shaft. My guess, if the adapter is the right one, is that someone tightened the original collet without a bit in it... that's a no-no. Can you get a 1/2" bit in it? If you can't then the collet has been compressed or possibly it's a metric one???
