Small Scrap Bin

Another quick project that was badly needed in the shop and will likely make a second one soon. This project was designed for 1 sheet of plywood challenge so it isn't as efficient as it should be. What I mean by that is the fellow that designed it had the target of using 1 sheet and he did well for that but after building it I saw where with just a tad more it could have held more and fully used the bottom. I added a few things on the back to take advantage of the overhang. His design had a tray on one side and the other could use the same except he didn't have enough left to do so. I added a back rail to hold more larger boards using the available backspace using scrap I had in the shop. Here's Chris's
which also has the download link for the plan (cutsheet)

Meanwhile here are a few shots of the bin after I added the back feature. I also changed the way the dividers are attached. Watch the video and you'll see he assembles the parts leaving no way to screw both ends of the dividers. If you watch and then think you'll see how easy it is beforehand. Not sure what screws he's using but I used #8-1-1/4" and pre-drilled before driving them.

No, those days are behind me. I'll leave the eating of sawdust to the young'ns. I even wear a mask these days when kicking up a lot of sawdust and before that have the dust collector and overhead filtered fan running. I didn't quit smoking to inhale "other" stuff. Especially when working with Cambia wood which is really nice looking stuff. Works great outside as well and as an exterior covering. But the sawdust is very fine and sharp. Used Cambia Ash to build the tripod legs for an old Alvan Clark refractor telescope. I'll accept the "Wuss" category.
Great idea and build.
I could definitely use some organization for my cut-offs. Nice cart, Steve.

It's either 10 minutes of woodworking, and 2 hours of cleaning up, or it's a woodworking store showroom.
I actually built a second due to the wasted space in the first and needing additional larger board storage. Both are built with construction grade B/C plywood which unfortunately is usually warped to some extent but with these sizes can be worked with although a pain. Cost difference makes it worthwhile in my opinion. Guess I'm a bit tight. The second one, without wheels till tomorrow thanks to Amazon Prime, has the box and one divider. No smaller compartments. I just wanted something for the larger scraps and it has the same dimensions with exception that it fills out the entire base without and lip. So the box is 21x35 overall. This frees up the panel rack I built originally for 4x8 sheet goods with a bit of cutoff storage on the backside. This leaves my rack storage for long solid wood boards.

And for the record, I usually spend 4-6 hours at a time working on these projects, sometimes more, and always cleanup afterwards. It takes 10-15 minutes to vacuum using the central system (CV1800) with my shop vac adapters. Table saw surface and fence first, outfeed table, and any other surface used or with any amount of saw dust. Last is the floor. It just doesn't take that long. and I have very good dust collection system in play. The router table seldom needs any attention after use.
