I am looking to buy a set of template router guides and was just curious if there is any real diffrence in brands. I know you need to check to see if the set actually fits the router you have and that they come in either steel or brass but other than that is there any real diffrence?

I guess this question was too stupid to reply too. In any case I have since purchased a set and am very pleased.

No question is too stupid...I prefer brass over steel because the brass is non-ferrous and has exceptional locking qualities. Non-ferrous is easier on the router bits than steel. The guide should be able to receive your ½" collets, which most don’t. Porter Cable, Freud and other guides were designed to work with 1/4" collets not the ½" collets of routers today. The 1-1/4" overall diameter does not allow the collet to be seated as close as possible to the cutting surface, which means you have to extend your router bits out further than need be.

I help to design the Oak Park guides in the late 70's. They were designed specifically to be used with the larger collets to reduce chatter of router bits, are made of brass because of the locking qualities of brass and the advantage of non-ferrous material. The guide selection is in 1/32nd increments from 1/4" to 1-1/2" giving a great variety of options...hopefully this is helpful.

Bob - I met you at the cloverdale wood show. I asked you what router you were using and you pointed out the porter cable 890 series. I purchased it and then went to your display area where I purchased the black inset that attaches to the router and fits into the router table. I realize now that I will need another one for the plunge router - I looked on your website but am not sure which one I need to order. Would you be able to help me. Tnx Burt ps this router is great. tnx
