Last spring I aquired a Mathias Wandel pantograph. I have been trying to learn how to use it. This is my first attempt at a project.

Very nice Herb , love the look of the wood grain also . That's a really interesting looking machine you've got there . Looks as though you've got it mastered ;)

Thanks guys, I didn't think it was that good,I was afraid i was going to mess up some, but lucked out and used them all.

All these were done freehand ,just tracing over the pattern. The pantograph is set at 50% size so any wavering doesn't show badly. also by doing flowers and leaves and such a little deviation from the pattern doesn't show. one thing I found while practicing was to not stop just keep going, if I stop I get a divot, and if I go back over a cut it really messes it up because I can't retrace my steps.
Setting the correct depth for the cutter bit is important too. I am using a 15 degree sign bit from MLCS I tried the 30 and 60 degree bits ,but for what I am doing they cut too wide and wipe out the close detail. They work good for lettering. But I think that templates would be better for lettering than freehand.

John, I am not proficient enough in computers and programing to do the CNC thing. And I leave that for you to keep turning out those beautiful pieces.

I got to see these before Herb made the boxes. He demonstrated his technique at our woodworkers association. He is selling himself short. I watched him cut a demo and it does take a steady hand. The size reduction of the pantograph helps but it is fun to see. Great job Herb.

You are the computer - programed perfectly
The patterns make the boxes.

You have inspired me to try to reassemble dads oldpantograph. After several moves I will be lucky to find all the parts. . .:|

Nice job, and useful. It's always handy to have a box of tissues around. But next, I think you should make one that holds toilet paper, it's easy to run out of tissue, but you always make sure you have toilet paper on hand. It's got me thinking on how to make a toilet paper box, not hard, just got to get on it.
