Hi there Fraternity.
Just a quick one. If you ever have had the opportunity to peruse my previous postings, you will realise that as a retired plumber from the Highlands of Scotland I am a very poor, mostly due to the outgoings of my good wife, and as such there is nothing better than a good tool bargain.
I have already stated that I installed 415v three phase in my workshop as the woodworking machines are really cheap compared to 240v available which are quickly snapped up.
However here in the UK the best deals are at the car boot sales and fetes etc dotted all around the country especially at this time of year.
On Saturday I attended the Glamis Extravaganza held at the ancestral home of the Queen Mother.
It’s a huge estate with a fairy tale castle and a delight to visit. I have included a couple of photos for our US cousins.
Every year the Strathmore vintage car club hold a huge two-day meeting and its vast and there are hundreds of associated stalls with tools galore. Yes, lads, kid in a candy store.
I visited a local charity stall and picked up my first torque wrench. Always wanted one, haven’t a clue what for, but had to have it. Retail new around £100 plus. On Saturday £10. It’s as I write already been stripped down, thoroughly cleaned, rebuilt and in the wrench cupboard to be used god knows when.
Next visit was a junk stand selling everything. Noticed the Bosch torch, and as I have that particular drill snapped it up for £10 and he threw in the Battery for free, both new and unopened. New £27 and £21 for the battery
My wife had to step in at this point as I was getting really excited and she had to take me for an ice cream cone to calm me down. As a treat she made it a 99 with the chocolate wafer sticking out the top. Does it get better than this?
Last was another junk type stand and as I rummaged came across a block plane still in its packing at the bottom of a tool box. Guy wanted, yes you guessed £10. You can’t make this up. New about £25 to £35.
I have shown my new plane along with my other planes to demonstrate the bargains out there. The most expensive plane you see in the photo is the No4 which I again purchased at that very fair a number of years ago and was £12.
So, the moral of this story is don’t get old and don’t get poor.
