Up spirits

My best friend’s neighbor has a micro-distillery in his garage where he makes handcrafted, small-batch whiskey (he spells it whisky like the Scots). Being a man who has been known to have a tipple or two on occasion, (okay, Irish whiskey every evening … unless it’s raining, and then I have two) I knew a sign was required to celebrate such a grand endeavor.

I had an orphaned oak cabinet door I’ve been saving for something just like this. The design was created in V Carve Pro as a combination of elements and fonts from LetterheadFonts.com, and other than a 1/4” spiral bit to clear away some of the background, all was carved with a 60º V bit. Finish is a combination of maple stain and burnt umber glaze followed by a few coats of gloss polyurethane.

Using oak for the sign, of course, ties into the oak barrels he uses to mature his blend. Yeah, about that … I haven’t tried his whiskey for a few reasons. First, because I think his oldest stuff was matured in the barrel for a whopping 6 months and I prefer my whiskey to be 5 to 10 years old. Second, he tends to mix barley and rye and maybe corn in the production a single batch. Not my cuppa. I think in a less polite society we would call his brew, moonshine. But hey, he’s having fun and now he’s got a heckuva sign.

By the way, a recent study presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science revealed that consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol and coffee is linked to living longer and decreased the chances of premature death by 18%. And, "people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people did." Plus, another study showed that drinking might help clear toxins from the brain … at least it did in mice.

I fully understand if you abstain. As for me, I think I’ll start adding a bit cheese to my evening tipple … oh, and maybe little ice cream. One can’t be too careful with one’s health.

Awesome sign! By my own choice I abstain from the wonderful spirits of my younger days rather than succumb to its mastery over my life.

Fantastic sign yet again Oliver !
I drink beer , cause I get to much of a hangover on whiskey . But my favourite drink is Gibson’s Finest and Pepsi . Unfortunately it goes down way to easy ,and I end up spending a few days in bed

Very nice sign, as usual, Oliver! I, too, choose to abstain entirely (is that redundant...?). Haven't had anything to drink since 1976; it's not an industry I choose to support. The sign is fantastic!

Great job on the sign, Oliver. I like the choice of fonts, they really set off the sign.

I abstain from alcohol, and have for several years. Not by choice tho, keep forgetting to get beer when I am in the store. However, I do have coffee, Scooby snacks, and a cartoon channel. Might be 77, but mentally still in my late 20s, early 30s. Nice sign by the way Oliver. Share with friends, eh? This mean I can expect a pint coming my way?

NIce sign, Oliver.
I only drink beer, having discovered at an early age that I have no self-control with the hard stuff. Haven't had "hard liquor" since draining two pint bottle and one fifth of Vodka on New Year's Eve, 1971. Something about puking blood for four days convinced me that I shouldn't do that again.

Nice sign. That name is very common in Louisiana's Cajun country. So......if French, it should be wine. If Cajun, it is beer on Saturday night!
Interesting comments. It is not known by many that a person doesn't know they are an alcoholic until they take that first drink. I worked with a guy who would not drink because his father had an alcohol problem. To those of us who don't indulge, fine. To those who enjoy a glass or two, fine.

Theo,

be careful with the 'Scooby snacks'.... they have a totally different definition today. The things you learn after your kids go through the D.A.R.E classes in high school.

No prob, mine are bought in the grocery store. And I don't snack on them after smoking some of those wildwood weeds either
