Hi, i just bought my first wood lathe and i want to get a faceplate and a chuck to it, but there is this piece that i dont know how to take off it, so i was wondering if anyone knew if there is a special tool or something to take it off, i have tried with two wrenches and used a lot of power but it dosn't come off.

Thanks, yeah bit it looks much worse than it is in this picture.

Welcome to the forum I believe it is threaded on. You may have to heat it up with a oxyacetylene torch. Then hit it with a hammer to try and break the rust loose. I am not sure if the effort would be worth it in the end. Make sure you check the bearing if you end up heating it up.

If it doesn't have a spindle stop or any way to stop the shaft from turning your pretty much left with it the way it is. It's still useful for some turning. No turning between centers or faceplate bowl work.
The piece you want to remove is actually a means of turning the stock. So even if you get it removed save it for future use.

Go to the OWWM (Olf Wood Working Machines) site. You can find it on YouTube. I'm sure someone on this site has solved this same problem. Just out of curiosity is the shaft hollow and accessible from the other end of the power head? If so it maybe a tapered fit. If open stick a steel rod in and give it a good smack..
