Sorry David, not original and there are a lot of variations. Good example though. I saw this just last week where a person was cutting a foam form to use in making a ceramic tile mold. Another variation is double stick tape (turners tape) instead of screws to hold the work-piece on a board that is larger to allow cutting.
I do something similar when not wanting to surface the entire table. I only surface smaller spots where the supporting pieces are going to lay.
Of all the different things related to a CNC, holding the work seems to be a constant search.
