Stan, I once saw something like this when my Dad used to fix his own tube tires on his old 30's model Oakland (which I think became part of the Pontiac family) If I remember the bottom of the screw flange would clamp on top of a "patch unit" which contained something flamable, and he would lite the patch unit with a match (patch was impregnated with some sort of sulfur chemical, anyway it stunk like that, I couldn't have been more than 5 to 8 when I remebember it being used in the early40's)and it would flame up for a bit and melt the new patch to the old innertube. This is my best guess. I bet the old unit is still up in Mom's basement as I remember seeing it about 20 years ago and its in a box of junk she would never dream of cleaning up.

Hmmm... If we can validate that in any way Stevo -- then you get the points.

Need some sort of validation though... not that I think you'd pull my leg or anything like that... :p ;)

Anyone else?
Please don't send me any points; I'm sure there will be other suggestions. I'll be a few weeks before I travel and look in Mom's basement/garage to see how similar the units may be. In the meantime... comeon gang, put on your thinking caps........
