It is called a flexible curve. It lets you draw a perfectly contoured curve without measuring and help in transferring curved designs from plans or originals. Just bend to any curve down to a 1" radius-they'll hold it, without springback, as long as you need it. Made with a lead core completely enclosed in flexible plastic. One side has a raised edge for inking.

Its an infinite "french curve" used to "best fit" a curve through as many "random points" as possible. Used for cases where traditional french curves just will not pass through enough of your points to produce a smooth continuous line. Could possibly be used to "transfer" a non uniform curve from one surface to another, but I have never used it for that purpose. Remainder of the above answer generally applicable.

You know combining the two answers gives about a good an answer as could be expected so seeing as how I'm in a good mood dispite being up at 5:30 am I going to declair a double winner. ejant cover the basic details, I'm not sure he didn't make up the raised edge for inking....... and steveo added the "best fit" info, now keep that in mind when your help your kids with that science project.

I'm not sure but I think this was in the $10 US range so put it on the shopping list if you don't have one and you do your own designs.

Do you remember how much they cost?

I also found that it does have a the ink function! Mine also has an inch scale on one side and mm on the other..... 24" or 600mm. I don't recall where I purchased it, it could have been woodcraft?????
