Whiteside 3390 Fine Finger Joint Router Bit

5/16" - 1 1/4" MATERIAL THICKNESS
1 3/8" LARGE DIAMETER
5/16". FINGER DEPTH
3 1/4" OVERALL LENGTH
1/2" SHANK

I purchased this router bit to make finger joints on the corners of small decorative boxes, however, this bit is not designed for that application. I made 2 test cuts and realized that fact.
This bit is designed to cut finger joints on the ends or edges of two boards, to make them longer or wider.
This bit is very sharp and makes very precise and accurate joints.

This bit sells for $126, but I have found it on sale for $100 plus shipping.
The only comparable bit is the Freud 99-037 which sells for $100 plus shipping, but it could probably also be found on sale.

As good as Freud bits are, I prefer Whiteside, because I always get better results from Whiteside bits.

I have absolutely no use or need for this bit, and they will not take a return because I made 2 test cuts.

Almost Brand New Bit (2 test cuts) - $70

Interesting bit. Looking at the top of my workbench, I see how they've taken short pieces of Maple and used this kind of bit to join them. But that means jointing and planer work to get every piece of scrap exactly the same width and thickness. Glue, pressure and you get long pieces.

I'm guessing that you were mislead by the manufacturer's name for that bit Jim. If you look at texts from a century ago that profile was called a splice joint which is what it is and the only thing it's good for. It is occasionally referred to as a tapered finger joint but a true finger joint is what many refer to now as a box joint.

Your options for small boxes is a true finger joint, 45* miter joint, miter joint with splines, lock miter joint, or small dovetail.

Thanks all. I should have researches further, but to me, finger joint means just that. Finger joint and box joint terms are intertwined all throughout woodworking articles, videos, and forums. I just need to be more careful.

I make boxjoints on the tablesaw and router table all the time. This bit just seemed like it would be easier. They do make a bit for finger/box joints by those names, however the cutters are not tapered.

Thanks for the welcome, but I have been a member of this forum for a good while now, under different names, because I either forget my name or my password, and I'm too brain dead to document that info somewhere.
I have gone by jg2259, [email protected], jimgallo37, and a few others.
When will I learn?

Jim...there is a forgot password feature (in case it happens again) that allows you to enter your email address and a temporary password will be emailed to you...then you enter the temporary password, log in, go to Account Settings and change the password to a new one...(don't ask me how I know this)

When you log in and don't enter the right password you will get a long error message that ends in something like this "if you forgot your password click here"...click on the "here"...you're good to go...

Welcome again...wish I had a need for your bit but don't see one in my future...but thanks for offering it to the Forum...

We had a huge discussion on this a while back. Its mainly to do with American writings interchanging the words and everybody just following on..
The finger joint is a tapered joint as you have found out, solely for edge jointing boards.
What you need is either a Box joint cutter, or a Comb joint cutter.

And we'll probably keep having that discussion Bob. Many of the references I've seen to finger joints were from European masters.

If you google finger joint most of what I see comes up like this:
"Image result for finger joint
A finger joint, also known as a comb or box joint, is a woodworking joint made by cutting a set of complementary rectangular cuts in two pieces of wood, which are then glued. To visualize a finger joint simply interlock the fingers of your hands at a ninety degree angle; hence the name "finger joint."

While I was looking for an example to add to my last post I saw this and it's worth sharing. One of the issues with gluing up finger joints is the time it takes to apply the glue to all the surfaces and that the glue often has time to cause the wood to swell before you are done which makes mating the two sides difficult. This article suggests adding CA glue after the pieces are mated. Interesting idea. The "Chair Doctor" mentioned is a CA glue that Lee Valley sells. 3 Tips for Better Finger Joints - Popular Woodworking Magazine

They didn't mention that when you put your fingers together they are all not the same widths, and they are tapered. They are finger joints, not boxed.
