Wicked Fast Router Bit Organizer Trays

I posted this elsewhere on the internet a few days ago and it got a lot of attention, so some of you may have seen this already. But it just occurred to me that it would be appropriate here.

I found a way to make router but organizers wildly faster by cutting dadoes instead of drilling holes.

Thanks. I just realized that I only have one post. I’ve had an account for a while and apparently haven’t contributed much (any).

I loathe when single posters come in and drop links to their stuff. So, feel free to delete this thread if it violates any sort of standards/etiquette for this forum.
We love pictures and good ideas, relax this is not like some of those forums out there, we like for all our members to participate no matter what level of woodworking they do.
So pull up a chair and participate we are glad you are here.

and this is still faster and cheaper...

Use closed cell sponge foam rubber (like Rubber Plumbing Pipe Insulation) in ¾''± wide by 1½ ~ 2'' thick strips STOOD ON EDGE and laid tightly together a drawer...
mastic (like PL-300) in the strips in if you wish..
no holes to drill or crosses to cut... just put the bits in between the strips...
infinite spacing is one fell swoop...
Kill two birds with one stone.
First is a spacing issue. It always seems that the uniform holes are either too close or too far apart, which eats up the space.
Second, is using a "hard" holder (wood, MDF, etc). The holes always seem to be too loose or too tight as use, temperature and humidity grows and shrinks the holes.
You get the best in flexibility with infinite spacing and self adjustable tension on the bit shafts.

I rescued the cut off scraps from a foam rubber seller... (dumpster dove)
can't argue that price...

I like the dado idea but it makes it almost impossible to have bits of different shank sizes organized close to each other. I like to keep my bits grouped, all round over bits at one place for instance. With extenders and er20 and different routers and different collets, organizing the bits after shank size doesn't make sense in my shop.

Nah. I've got one each 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" bits, all in routers. And one spare 1/2" bit in a drawer. Won't work for me.

You could make the dados sizes wider to stand the routers up in for storage

Nah, that would be work, and a waste of wood. The routers are all screwed to router plates, each router plate has a hole in it, and I hang them from nails in the rafters. They are out of the way, don't take up usable space, and easily available.

Nah, you're not thinking about it right. You hang the ones you aren't using from the rafters.
As for these two concerns...

That's what brought me to the solution, so I could solve it by having the spacing all close together, which would have taken a lot of time with holes.

I've used my prototypes for over a year and the recommendations in the video are tried and tested to *not* be too tight or too loose. Humidity doesn't grow and shrink the wood enough to make a difference.

I feel like the availability can be argued with though - which dumpster can somebody go to to find these free scraps? The dado solution uses scraps without going dumpster diving. How long did it take you to assemble/glue the foam?

BTW - your idea of foam sounds like it would work great. I just don't see how it can be faster & cheaper for the typical woodworker.

wait... how on earth do you drill holes that fast?

In 5 minutes, I drilled the intersecting-dado equivalent of 384 "holes" for the Dremel bits tray. My entire solution is based on getting away from the time of drilling holes, so please do share how you drill holes so fast.
