My initial reaction was Hickory as that seems to be the preferred wood for tool handles. That choice is confirmed here.

Thank You All for your Help! I believe it was "Hickory" that I heard mentioned as the Best wood to stop the wandering of a rocking chair in motion. Much appreciated! Wish you all the best of the Season!

A word of caution. The hardwood lumber yards i have dealt with have hickory and pecan in the same bin so you better be careful. I don't know if pecan is as likely to be straight grained and not prone to easily splitting.
