WS3000 Sharpening Centre

I decide to make the Binford 3000 WS3000 sharpening centre out of some scrap I had in the shop.

This served two purposes: Firstly it allowed me to use and clean up some wood and make some room for me. Secondly, I wanted to make a centre to store my tempered glass wheels.

I really like the way this turned out for me because now I can easily progress through the grits to get a nice sharp edge on my chisels. I can store everything in one place now and it will help keep the shop more organized.

I made my own custom hand pulls for the drawers. Simple to make and again I used some old scraps of maple. The drawer faces I used a piece of 1x3 pine and planed it down to 1/2". I found the 3/4" looked to big and I like the look of the 1/2" proportion wise.

Believe it or not this took me two days to build because of all the edge banning and dado's I had to do.

All that is left is a coat of varnish to help preserve the wood.

Dan... I recently picked up a WS3000 and really like your design, especially the shelved dowels retaining the glass wheels. What is your plan for the sandpaper for each disk? Stacking it on the dowel, under the wheel, or stored separately?

I store the extra sand paper discs underneath the disc that has the same grit on either side. Hence why I have so many disc. I wanted to have a wheel ofr each grit so I can gradually move up in the grits to sharpen my chiesels. Saves time swapping out the discs as you sharpen.

I used 3/8 dowels and with 5/8" pads the dowels were inserted with a hammer and hit so they sit flush. I did not need to glue them only friction fit.

Do not make the mistake I did and cut your pieces for the side and then decide to put Maple edge ban on. I should have did all the edge ban first and then cut the dados. I had to do it afterwards and thats why it took me so long to make.

I also would place the plywood with the good side facing on the inside so you can see it apposed to what I did.

Jim you reallyl ike this once you get the hang of it. I also bought the wide blade attachment as well ands tore it in the drawer below along with the allan key and honing compond.

All is well with us and I just blew the shop down myself. We need to chat sometime just to get caught up on things. Don't be a stranger.

I like it Dan. I save my saw dust to put on top of my plants to keep the weeds down. Poor country boy wastes nothing.

Great Idea Dan.

I like it, I think I'm gonna steal your idea as long as you don't mind. I've been trying to figure out what I'm gonna do with all the disc, and wheels for my ws3000, and the unit itself.

Thanks.
