Yep, I'm a NEWB

I guess everyone is a newb of something at some point in time...

Brief background of me. Retired professional Photographer. Shot fashion, senior work, weddings, etc Taught photography classes on the road for a while too. Owned my own darkroom while shooting medium and large format film.

I'm actually semi-retired. Currently a network admin for a small company for the past 20 years or so. I played around with a wood lathe for a bit making bowls, pens, etc... Currently I have 2 lasers. One CO2 and One Fiber. I engrave powder coated tumbler, pens, slate coasters, etc...

What I would like to is to use a CNC to batch out charcuterie boards, and produce other items as well, and possibly use my CO2 to engrave company logos or monograms on the charcuterie boards.

I understand a bit about XYZ axis because of my CO2 laser. I would love any input on entry level CNC machines and videos about the software that is used to produce products like the serving trays...

Anyone enough about me. I'm ready to see if I can figure out CNC for wood working.

Thankx for your time.

Thanks Dif. Been eyeballing this one... Shapeoko 4 CNC Router

Saw a couple of U-Tubes on them and that's my total engagement so far... LOL I WOULD LOVE it if I could use LIGHTBURN to send the image to a CNC, but I don't thinks it's doable. I just want to take an image of a charcuterie board, and import it into the CNC software, but I'm not even sure that's doable.. I have quite a bit to learn in this area.
I'll take a look at the mfg you suggested as well.

Just wondering... I have a large RIKON band saw with some extra blades for it. One blade is approx 1/4 wide. I've never done any band saw work, but I'm thinking of getting some scrap wooden planks here in the barn, and see if I can just cut some basic charcuterie boards out with it. Of course, I can't batch work the stuff, but worth a try I guess.

You definitely can. Fun as well. Band saws have a ton of potential depending on the blade you have on it. I wish I was better with it.

Love making charcuterie boards to use up odd and ends.

This one was band saw cut. Not perfect since I did it by memory which is never a smart thing to do for an old geezer like me. Not really that old but feel the mileage.

If you get a cnc there is a learning curve but once you get past it, it will open up all sorts of options for creativity. I primarily do 2.5d carvings with my cnc but charcuterie boards are easy gift ideas.

Hi and welcome to the fun. A couple of things, when asking about CNC stuff, make sure you put those letters in your post title so the CNC gurus here don't miss it.

I was also a photographer for many years, mostly photojournalism, combined with writing. Did some commercial stuff and spent a few years making non theatrical films. I only recently gave my film cameras to my grand daughter, including my old enlarger and darkroom stuff.

Just for fun, check out making band saw boxes. Fun projects that cry out for decorations you could do beautifully with CNC.

Love thos Oscar... Excellent in my opinion. My father in law passed away earlier this year, and in his barn he has a smaller band saw. May fire that up tomorrow with a practice piece of wood.

Desert, I really enjoyed the film stuff. I still have all the darkroom gear stored in an farm house here. Sold my 120 camera and lenses, but still have my 5x4. I'll see if I can edit my title in the thread as well.
