Default Bench Top Drill Press

Good evening, has anyone had any luck with Harbor Freight 5 Speed Bench Drill Press item #60238? I am running out of space and I would like a small drill press. I am not a machinist so I believe a 5 speed should suffice. I have read reviews on other drill presses but it seems only the mad customers leave reviews. Thanks, Chris

I can't directly answer about the 5 speed as I have the heavy duty benchtop 16 speed. It was a good purchase for me and have 'pushed' the dickens out of it, including some heavy steel drilling today. I've had it probably 15 years with no real problems. While there are some minor differences, this HF/Central Machinery DP has been sold under several names including Delta.

One problem that I did have - the chuck had significant runout(.060 plus) and was replaced with a JET brand which has none. These are #2 Morse Taper installed chucks, so an easy change out These DP will crack the table height adjuster if you overtighten.

I strongly suggest something bigger then the 5 speed as well as one that has a key type chuck - it's amazing how fast you discover a small DP just wont do the job

I agree with Dave. I had a HF 5 speed for over 9 yrs and had no problems with it. I found I needed slower speeds so I upgraded it to the 12 speed, 44836, about a year ago. Have had no problems with this one either. If you get HF coupons, there is one often for $99 for this DP. Well the extra $30.

I've got two of the little buggers. One from about 1996/7; a week after I got it, needed a new switch, which ran about $5 at Lowes. Still going strong. Got the other, I don't know, maybe a year or two ago, working fine. Neither has any visible runout. The newer one will eventually wind up in my spare room in the house, where I'm trying to assemble a small shop for some of my work that is more convenient for me - like having a toilet just a few steps away. And I happen to like key chucks.

HFT has great equipment and I've never had a problem that couldn't be resolved easily. I own the older 5 speed DP and its been awesome since day one. I bought it over 20 yrs. ago when I started building a workshop. I've upgraded DPs over time as need required, and plan to keep them all. HFT tools are perfect for me.

FYI, The March issue of Wood Magazine has a HF coupon for the 44836 12spd DP for $99 ($70 off).
