Default What Wood For Jig Collar

I want to make a flat collar out of wood that will be tightened via a threaded rod with a knob or nut. The collar will be 3/4" thick. Hole through the center of the collar board, thin saw kerf running from the outer edge to the center hole. The rod and knob will tighten the hole around the tool. Think plunge type base for a trim router. The question is what would be the best wood for this? It will have to have a little spring to it so it won't split when the saw kerf is drawn closed.

White oak, as Stick suggested. Make your cut across the grain.

I make mine out of BB plywood or Maple. I have one on the drill press w/4" hole to clamp on the column and a 4" hole in a yoke to hold my DC hose. An other one out of 1 1/2" material, maple to hold a small grinder in my DP vise to do spindle grinding.
