Default Painting Luan...Doh!

I mistakenly purchased Luan 5.2mm Ply. I'm making built in bookshelves that will be painted. I meant to pickup simular product with birch veneer goodside. Can I prime and paint over it? I'm planning on using zinser primer and oil based paint. I had the store cut the the three sheets to size so there is no bringing them back. I'm more annoyed if I can't paint them that they will take up space and get in my way if I don't use them.
