Default Delta 28-299 BS

I have an opportunity to get this saw for $400. I'm told it's in excellent condition and was a special release made in the USA. Anyone have experience with this model? I can't find much info on the web about it. Worth the money?

Here's a link for the owner's manual:

http://www.dewaltservicenet.com/docu...2-651-0040.pdf

I have no experience with that model, but from the photos in the owner's manual, it appears to be a medium-duty saw. The manual refers to a 1hp motor, so it's a bit heftier than the 28-276 currently listed on the Delta site, which has a 3/4hp motor.

A new 28-276 runs about $480, so the $400 price tag seems a little high to me.

Thanks Ralph.
The saw was $800 new and is USA iron. I've read many reviews where people aren't all that enthused about the newer Deltas. It's often said to look for a 28-299. I found one pic of the saw, and many places have parts for it, so I'm not too worried in that area. I'll get an up close and personal look at it Friday.
I'm having trouble finding a spec sheet on the thing.

"I'm having trouble finding a spec sheet on the thing."

Yes, it's unfortunate that Delta doesn't include a specs page in their owner's manuals. At least, I've never seen one.

You might print out the owner's manuals for both the 28-299 and the 28-276 to see if there are differences beyond the 1hp motor. The pics looked similar to me, but that might not reflect materials and quality of finish.

I notice the stand for the 28-276 is an open stand as opposed to an enclosed base. It is also 3 speed. Single speed doesn't bother me as I have never changed the speed of the saw I have now. High speed and let'r rip.
There are several other differences such as 3/4hp as opposed to the 28-299 having 1hp. The 28-299a has 1.5hp and a higher speed motor, but that one I want to stay away from.

I believe the open or closed bases could be ordered with either. They just picture one or the other for convenience. More HP is good, particularly if you plan to do any resawing.

I've never adjusted the speed on my 18" Inca, either. I did slow down the 10" Delta for cutting metal, though.

At our wood club get-together last night, I was checking out the Rockwell 14" that the school has. It's a spittin image of the 28-299. Just a different color and nameplate. Delta didn't change anything when they bought Rockwell.

There's an interesting history of the company at:

http://www.deltaportercable.com/Abou...a_history.aspx

Lots of hand-changing over the years, with Black & Decker (http://www.bdk.com/), which also ownd DeWalt, buying both Delta and Porter Cable in 2005.
