I've only used purpleheart in small pieces (3/4 x 3/4 x 5", for pen making). If it's cut for some time, it could look brown on the outside, then purple when milled--but I've not seen any that had a real reddish cast. The pen on the far left is actually the deepest purple I've ever seen--blank was brown/yellow on the outside (heartwood/sapwood), and I could not ID the wood until I turned it. The rest, from left to right are segmented paduak/wenge, 3 Honduran mahogany (scrap from the old Gibson factory in Kalamazoo), Banksia Speciosa pod cast in resin, teak, dyed & stabilized maple burl.

Great pens Earl. The Honduran Mahogany is a possibility that I need to explore further. Thanks.
