Default Dead Bandsaw

I turned on my Startrite bandsaw, and it just went clunk. No movement of the motor or blade. I have checked the fuse and plug. both ok. The cable is fine from the plug to the connector within the bandsaw. How do I determine where the problem is. It could be the motor, starter capacitor or the on/off switch. I have common sense and a multimeter. I can strip down the switch unit, but how do you check for a burnt out motor or starter capacitor?

Hi Mike,

Check the brushes first. Blow out the motor if need be. I use a multimeter myself when checking motors, capacitor's and such. Sometimes, even the motor themselves have a circuit breaker on them, this may have tripped. Again, some do, some don't.

Is the motor enclosed, or does it have any slots, for something to get in. It may be worth a check!

Checked out. The contactor coil in the on switch has failed. A new one is on order.
