Default Random Orbit Sander

A few questions about RO Sanders
  1. Where is the cheapest place to buy/order hook & loop sanding discs?
  2. What is the best/cheapest way to replace the hook & loop backing pad?
  3. How long should the hook & loop backing pad last?
  4. If using the universal hole (fits 5 hole, 8 hole, ...) sanding discs, does the extra junk that gets between the H&L backing pad and the sanding disc wear out the H&L faster?

I ask this question because I am on my 3rd RO sander in about 7 years. My first was a Bosch, 2nd Ryobi, and 3rd Ridgid. I use this tool a lot but even then it does not see daily use. I don't know how many times I replaced the backing pad & H&L pad on the Ryobi. I have had the Ridgid for about 6 months now and the H&L is starting to go.

Yeah, use 'em all the time. I am using a Milwaukee this morning. And I have a couple Makita's andI think an old Craftsman. I don't seem to have the same problems you do. And I've worn out a backing pad.
Might I be so bold as to ask......do you really LEAN on your sander when using?
You may also have bad Karma....and there's nuttin we can help you with there. Maybe cook a skunk in a rubber pot over a buffalo chip fire and dance around a bit but thats all.

I've had an old (12-15 years old) DeWalt... Only recently got another after the plastic on the dust catcher cracked. I got the second one to test the new-style dust catcher vac adapter with the old one. I haven't checked (or used) it yet but if it works I figured I'd just get a new-style adapter for it too. It doesn't hurt to have a second ROS. Has anyone ever tried two-fisted ROS sanding? I've heard of two-fisted drinking, but...

Check out that new high-tech cordless router.. wireless and no recharging required!!

Hi - Welcome to the forum
This is the best I can do:
1 - Wal-Mart
2 - Dunno, haven't had one wear out yet.
3 - Refer to #2.
4 - Refer to #3

John Schaben

The problem with experience is I usually get it immediately after I need it.

It has been my observation that some of the cheap papers don't last as long as some of the more pricey papers, so if changing out your paper at a 2-1 ratio I don't see any cost savings. Do yourself a favor and compare a cheap pack to a more costly choice and discover the longer life.

I believe heat is the culprit..go lightly and keep the paper as cool as possible
