Default steel plate wings?

Ok, so i just purchased a used early 80's craftsman 10 inch table saw and I already want to improve it. I am limited on money an want to do the most I can with the least money. I want to replace the stamped steel 10" wings with something stiffer and flatter. I don't think I will be able to afford the cast wings for some time but have some steel around that I can make a frame and use steel plate for the top. Is this a common alternative? I realize I will have to be carefull on the welding so that I do not warp the wing. I have also seen wood or formica topped pannels used as wings.

So what are the cons of using steel plate and steel flat bar for ribs to make wings. What are the cons of formica covered wood.
