Default Wood stain

My daughter has asked me to build her a keepsake box and the color that she wants is best described as "real dark cherry". I was thinking of using cherry wood and mahogany stain.

Any thoughts or ideas.

Thanks

I got lost in thought. it was unfamiliar territory.

Cherry wood and cherry stain. You can take much of the liquid out of the can before stirring it up. That will leave more of the pigment to make it darker.
Leaving cherry in the sun will also darken it.

.
Never, under any circumstances, combine a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

First reply nailed it; putting cherry stain on cherry just kind of makes it darker. Direct sunlight does the same thing, although that'd take a couple months to work.

Here is a cherry wood with red mahogany (gel) stain finished with spray-on poly (left) and wipe-on poly (right), both with a steel-wool-and-wax last coat. Note the left piece was a trial piece and the top is not planed.

You make the call...

I let the sun darken it. I then linseed oil it to pop the grain, apply a 1lb cut of shellac, very lightly sand it and apply my choice of top coat.
