I use this one from Harbor 'Fright' ;-) . It does the trick, it's cheap and my grandson used it last Halloween when he dressed up as a TSA agent.

they have a cheaper version, also.

I have a similar one made by Garrett.

??? Hi Mike - Mine works pretty well, picks up buried 23 guage pins consistently. Also picks out drywall screw heads under 3/4" OSB. Key seemed to be getting the sensitivity adjusted correctly. What kind of problems were you having?

John Schaben

The problem with experience is I usually get it immediately after I need it.

John,
I was making a project out of skid wood. I did play with the sensitivity setting but getting inconsistent results. I randomly shot 23 ga. pins, 16 ga. brads into the top and sides of a 2x4 at different depths to try and set it. Still could not set it to pick up most of them.
I may have just had a bad unit. I ended up using epoxy to attach a rare earth magnet on a 12" 1/4" square dowel. Balance it on my finger and run it around the wood (both sides). Worked good but VERY slow.
I may give one another try in the future.
