Ah, the only response he's liable to get will go something like this...

Hello! I am ready to purchase your item at its asking price! It is a most excellent item! Kindly reply and send pics to my email in order for me to know its most perfect condition. Also, including your name, address, final asking price. I will be paying you with a check, afterwards the check has cleared I will be arranging for pickup via parcel delivery, as I am presently not in the country just now. Thank you most excellent kind sir!

What just kills me is these foreign scammers learn a little bit of english and then try to pull this stuff. They actually think we talk like that and after all these years they have still not learned any different.. You don't even have to watch out for the way the scam is set up, the grammar alone is the tell.

Ebay has its share of sellers asking more than retail too.

Someone I consider a master woodworker once told me that a master woodworker is not someone who never makes mistakes. He is someone who is able to cover them up so that no one can tell.

I've seen that kind of response - knew it was a scam but I can't for the life of me figure out how they make any money. ID theft? I know for things like jewelry and coins, home invasion is a possibility but for a 500 lb tool? Or, in my case, two wicker couches?

By the way, I've been watching CL for an 8" long bed jointer for almost a year now and haven't seen any even close to reasonable deals. either clowns like the guy above or people that are very proud of their iron. I've seen used Jets that are more than a brand new griz with similar specs. Getting ready to break down and buy a new griz 8". If used, I'll get a spiral head for it since my planer head transplant operation was so successful.

I actually have that same jointer (bought it new from Grizzly). The jointer has been damaged, badly. The logo plate and the block tray may seem cosmetic, but the infeed height adjustment is missing as well. The jointer looks like it is only a year or so old, which leads me to believe that that thing got ran into by another piece of equipment. (Too new for wear and tear issues)

Phil:

Typically, they send a cheque for more than asking - then want the difference refunded. Cheques don't clear right away, usually take a while to clear the sender's bank and the cheque is usually forged.

By then you've sent the money and YOUR bank holds you responsible for the full amount.

They ask for your name, details, bank info, etc. for their future use.

Google Nigerian Scams (there are many variations and the prevalent ones involved trying to get $$$millions out of Nigeria because of "some military/political unrest") - I investigated a number of these when I was in law enforcement - sadly, some people actually fell for the scams.
