Default "What is it?" #52

Another one for 200 points as I again don't know what it is. Also found in my grandfather's box of old tools.

Name and description of use, and an additional 50 points if it is identified that there is a piece broken off -- and a picture of what it 'should' look like if complete.

I cannot see anyplace on the bottom right side that shows evidence of having been broken, but can't see how it would be used otherwise.

Stan, I once saw something like this when my Dad used to fix his own tube tires on his old 30's model Oakland (which I think became part of the Pontiac family) If I remember the bottom of the screw flange would clamp on top of a "patch unit" which contained something flamable, and he would lite the patch unit with a match (patch was impregnated with some sort of sulfur chemical, anyway it stunk like that, I couldn't have been more than 5 to 8 when I remebember it being used in the early40's)and it would flame up for a bit and melt the new patch to the old innertube. This is my best guess. I bet the old unit is still up in Mom's basement as I remember seeing it about 20 years ago and its in a box of junk she would never dream of cleaning up.

Hmmm... If we can validate that in any way Stevo -- then you get the points.

Need some sort of validation though... not that I think you'd pull my leg or anything like that...

Anyone else?

Please don't send me any points; I'm sure there will be other suggestions. I'll be a few weeks before I travel and look in Mom's basement/garage to see how similar the units may be. In the meantime... comeon gang, put on your thinking caps........

Steveo, I believe you are right in you guess. First time I saw it, that was what I thought it was. I recolect my Dad using one to patch tubes for the car and my bicycle. You describe the process very well. It did stink when he did it. It was called "hot patching" at our house.

50 points each to Steveo and Dr. Zook for giving it a try.

I'm not quite convinced yet though. I found 3 examples of hot patch clamps on the net and they all have a 'star' arrangment on the clamp head that mine does not have.
