Beastie's Replacement

As I posted earlier today, I acquired a new workshop; An Office Trailer. This one is just as bare
as Beastie was (if not more so) with a couple exceptions; he has a window a/c unit in in the wall,
baseboard heat, and three florescent light fixtures in the ceiling. (Whereas, Beastie had no lights
inside, and the only florescent one is the one that Ken put in for me just this past Spring I think it
was.) Oh yeah! And an alarm system that will deafen you if it goes off!!! (complete with motion
detector) and grates on the windows for security as well. I believe it was at one point broken into,
thus the reason for the extra security, which will come in handy for me. One break-in was enough
for me.

Below are the three pictures I have of him so far (I have a video, but I need to edit it before I get it
posted anywhere.) Just as I did with Beastie, I plan on keeping a picture diary of his progress. The
nice thing about this one, I have more windows, and hope to be able to improve the dust collection
here.

Portions of the floor need to be overlaid, as I found a couple soft spots, but that won't be hard, and
Ken has the experience with building my work tables. I plan on selling Beastie with his tables intact,
in hopes of it helping to sell him. This one, just as Beastie did, has a few cosmetic problems, but I plan
on taking care of that. I thought about calling him pumpkin, as he has orange trim as orange as a pumpkin,
but then thought better of it. Still considering a name for this guy; with the rust runnin down the side, I
may call him Rusty. I dunno, but I have time yet. As for the color, I've decided to make him all white, or
a shade of off-white. I was going to go with Forest Green in place of the Orange, but changed my mind.
Right now, I just want to get the floor fixed and make him Winter-Ready. I'm hoping to make some serious
sawdust in this one; and the best part of this whole thing? No starter problems to worry about!!
The Envoy hauled him without a problem, but it won't be moved around a lot, as I really don't like the idea
of hauling it with less than an 8 cylinder.

lol James. Too funny. Storing him at the moment where we have Beastie to
make the change over easier. Up and at 'em early this morning to get over
to our storage unit where our little trailer is to get the materials to start working.
Ken is going hunting this afternoon, so what we get done will most likely be
what we can accomplish before he leaves. I'll spend the afternoon working
on other things. I need to get window coverings, and I have to find a way to
redo the screens like I did in Beastie... DANG just remembered that! I need to
do the screens on that! *and the list grows longer....* lol

lol Esko, sorry dude. Couldn't pass up this boy. And thanks. Getting excited
about getting it work-ready. Ken & I were discussing where he's going to put
up the walls for the storage and the "potty room" yesterday. I've gained a half
a foot in width, but I think the length will be about the same, if you take into
consideration the cabin, or the seats up front in Beastie.

 LOL Pete... caught that, huh? Ya know, we were married before anyone even realized it.
The girl who sang at our wedding was telling her aunt that she was singing at Barb n' Ken's wedding,
and she busted up laughing, and when she asked what was funny, her aunt said "Get it? Barbie n' Ken?"

As for the paint, yeah, already up on that. He is a bit on the ugly side, but I think I'm going to do
him all white. I would LOVE to put something on the side for Out of the Woodwork, but I don't dare. The
thieving b*stards around here would be in there in a hot second. Gonna try and clean him up a bit today,
see how bad off the paint is - I noticed yesterday that I got white "chalk" when I wiped down the rust line.
May have to just get the dust off, and paint right over the rust run-off. We're gonna paint over the grates,
too. That should help with the run-off of rust. What I really liked was the tiled floor, but that's gonna end
up being covered by the new flooring that's going in, so I guess I'll have to deal with the wood. (Unless I
get a piece of linoleum and lay that down on top of it... we'll have to see.)

White is a good choice. In the winter it will not soak up heat like the green would. But on the other hand, in summer it will not soak up heat like the green would. Might want to look at Rustoleum paint.

Good find Barb. I remember those trailers well. Probably made by Satellite? In my past life I worked for general contractors. Those types of trailers were my field office for many jobs.

That should make a nice shop. Plenty of head room for shelves and such.

Good luck with your new project.

Up here ones like that are made by ATCO or Alberta Trailer Co. and are well insulated to be comfortable in any season. Is yours going to be better than Beastie that way?

#11 ·
The rust lines on this one that I'm beginning to call "Beastie Jr" is from the grates on the windows. I've already taken a rust, calcium, etc. to the back panel and gotten good results. So I'm thinking tomorrow Ill come out and clean off the rest of it

#12 ·
Congratulations on Beastie II (or whatever the name becomes). While you will be working to clean the rust off, I'll be keeping a file photo of it as a reference for creating faux weathering on future projects. :haha:

Thanks guys. I'm hoping it will. Found some soft spots in the floor and started laying
new floor on top this morning before Ken had to leave for hunting. (He had made these
arrangements earlier in the week and I was afraid if he cancelled his boss may get a
case of the @$$ and not ask again this season) it had a phone hookup and everything
but when we put on the floor Ken cut it cuz I won't need it.

The manufacturer of this one is Turbo Structures in Indiana, Charles. He does have
insulation, unlike Beastie and has baseboard heat and since I have the 5000 generator
I should be good to go. Going to look into getting battery backup for the alarm for when
I'm not around. Also found the trim at Home Depot so all I have to do is take off the
bottom that's been mangled and replace it. As for the top, well........ We'll cross that bridge
when we get to it lol. If I make the bottom white I may have to add just a splash of color
lol. Blue is my favorite but the Forrest Green wih a Brown accent is good for symbolizing
woodworking. Not gonna worry too much about it now. Ken got the beginnings of the
work table goin too this morning. I'll post pics of the progress tonight.

since I have the 5000 generator I should be good to go.
Nothing quite as irritating as a loud portable generator. No biggie to put a car muffler on one, me I'd go with two. Here's some links. https://www.google.com/search?q=how...enerator&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

The few I looked at here all put just one muffler on. quieted them, yes, but I think you could do a lot better. I saw a video awhile back where a guy put two on a quad, and really quieted it down. If you can get a V8 car engine so quiet you can barely hear it, you should be able to get a generator as quiet. Especially if you use a couple of turbo car mufflers. In fact, if it was me, I might even put on three, and direct the exhaust straight up. But, your dime.

LOL Oliver. You're terrible. Ken wanted to cancel his afternoon hunt to work
on the trailer but I wouldn't let him. Crap. Just remembered I have to get window
measurements. I need to cover the windows from prying eyes.

Honest Barb, I wasn't busting your chops. I really do like the weathering. Here's a sample of a recent test I made tying to make new wood look like it's been used for a while. Your photo really is a valuable reference, especially for anyone doing model train layouts or the like. Of course, your new digs will look like new by the time you finish sprucing it up. :yes4:

Okay Oliver get me the GPS cuz I'm completely lost lol Which photo is helpful?
faux weathering? HUH? I guess I'm just not in the right book today

#18 ·
Theo, on that, my friend, you are right; it's annoying as h*ll to hear it, and when
I asked Ken about quieting it down, the idea was shot down; don't remember why,
though.

I'll check out that video, and I thank you. Maybe I can get Ken to change his mind,
because I really don't feel like listening to that thing roar. I can't think. Hard enough
to think when it's quiet, let alone with all that racket lol

#21 ·
Found the one with the ATV. Homemade silent ATV exhaust - YouTube He used a big muffler, the generator ones I saw all used smaller mufflers, and didn't do that great of a job as far as I could hear. I've been thinking about getting a generator, and I'm not about to listen to a bunch of racket from one, I'll be willing to put on as many mufflers as it takes to quieten one down, and no fear of backpressure, frontpressure, or any other pressure.

#19 ·
My 2 cents.......

I regard to Theo's suggestion, I would check to see that two mufflers does not create a back pressure situation and cause problems with the motor.

A lot of science goes into designing and building a muffler for a particular motor.

Good point, James. It's a Coleman 5000 Generator, and it's a bit weathered, but the best $160 I've spent.

Ok so we got some of the floor on, the old table removed in the front, Ken started
the new work station, and I started cleaning off the rust from the grates on the siding.
(Oh yeah. I put a door knob on the door, cuz it wouldn't close all the way.) Forgot to
take a picture of the table he started, but that will come later, I guess

Also including the picture of the back, after I got a good portion of the rust off. Tomorrow
will be a lot of scrubbing (oh yay).

Gotta call the alarm company tomorrow; want to try and do a battery backup. Also
want to call the trailer company and check on the cost of a new door.

Hi Barb

The system should already be set up for battery backup. You can use any thing from a 7ah to a car battery. The problem is keeping it charged.

If you need help send me a PM.

Al

PS
About three years ago I sold my security company and retired.

Congratulations Barb!

I think that should make a decent workshop for you and I know by the time you and Ken get finished with it will look like new.

When Ken finishes with all the work building your work tables and such I think you should let him visit me and build some work tables and insulate my shop for me. That probably won't happen so I guess I need to make the time and get it done so I can work more comfortably and have more work space.

Good Luck With Your Project!

#25 ·
:haha: Mike!!! He so badly wanted to cancel his hunting this afternoon to work on this...
without trying to sound too boastful, I think he and I make a good team on this kind of
stuff. (After we're done wanting to kill each other, that is ) Right now I'm trying to keep
him grounded on this project; stick to the task we're doing, then plan the next step, etc etc.
He's jumped around so much in his thinking, he made my head swim this morning

#28 ·
Technically, James, he's considered 8 x 20 (but inside is 19.5 feet.) What makes
him look so big is the 7 foot ceiling. I still have to get the broom/maintenance closet,
stock room, and "potty room" put in. But with the ceiling being 7 foot... hmmmmm
I'm thinking "attic" in the back for extra stock.....

#29 ·
For the type of work that you do Barb. it should be perfect. I agree that white should be the colour, because it will reflect heat and so will make the air conditioner have an easier time in the summer. Is it reverse cycle?

#30 ·
Is it reverse cycle?
HUH?:haha:

I know I want to have the electrical looked at - looks like the fuse panel has been changed up,
and I don't need or want an electrical fire, and the plug that comes out the back seems awfully
small to me... so I'm gonna see if I need to replace it with the heavier style cord, like what's on
RV's.

#32 ·
Thanks, Ross. I hope to post a few updates this weekend. Ken got the closets built, and a double shelf unit to hold my wood supply, as the one "supply closet" ended up being the microwave and coffee pot closet, or in other words, the kitchen lol

#33 ·
??? A kitchen AND a loo.....you will be taking him on vacation next........ROTFL.

#34 ·
OK, no more lifting the generator in and out. Just take it back and forth with you.

ROFL James!!!!

As for the "kitchen" we have this small microwave and a 4 (actually 2) cup coffee pot that we were using in Beastie and decided to put it in Bentley. Ken had made my closet for the wood when we decided that they should be in the back and in a closed in area to protect it from sawdust. Not sure if I have pictures or not of what we have done so far but will try and post some updates tonight or tomorrow. Ken DID get the curtain hung up for the back room yesterday. I hope to have the place organized somewhat tomorrow.
