Nice forum! Most of my recent information comes from the instrument-makers' forums, and doesn't conflict with what I've found here, so far.
I learned router use from my Dad, back in the '60's, and I'm amazed at the choices in tools and techniques available today. He had a healthy respect for these whirling death machines, yet no one thought much of wearing safety equipment then.
I mainly build guitars, so I do a lot of work with templates. So far, I only use a hand-held Ridgid combination machine, which I like very much.
Next for me is building a router table.
I came over here to find out more about spiral and shear cutters for pattern routing.
Question: do some of the "straight-flute" bits from CMT and Whiteside have a slight spiral to them?
Question: are end-mills safe to use at router speeds?
I bought Bill Hylton's Woodworking with the Router recently, and found the best explanation of feed direction I've seen. The woodworking jargon regarding uphill, feed against the rotation, climb cutting had been confusing before this.
